Okay, I was planning to make a post about this, but I shoved it for later because there’s so much I want to write about. However, I’ve seen people complain about their tag team (sooner than I expected), with it being biased against Chat Noir.
So here’s my little take on it.
The Miraculous greatest asset for me is The Characters. I mean really. From the protagonists, down to the side-characters that are not even emphasized, you will find fans who loves them and even make their own head canons and fanarts for them (Juleka for example). You will actually love even the villains of the story (Evillustrator, anyone?). So much so because we all find them cool and relatable. Everyone’s traits are very diverse and well-designed to the point that you’ll pay attention to it, despite the little screen time they have.
Of course, the attention they get are nothing compared to the attention the fandom gives to the two heroes.
Ladybug and Chat Noir
Honestly speaking, I think it’s their dynamic that made this show really popular across the globe. Not only because the story is revolutionary for the Magical Girl and the Superhero genre (which is also awesome), but also because these two characters had found their way to our hearts.
Really, I think it’s a very well made decision for Adrien to replace Felix (sorry Felix!), because I believe majority of us are watching here for Adrien/Chat Noir and his puns…
… And of course, his tandem with Ladybug.
I mean, come on! Just a simple touch from these two and the fans will be in an uproar! They are the heart of this show!
Isn’t that why we are so happy as they are both equalize in matters of importance in the 17th episode? Isn’t that the reason why the fans deflated when the 18th episode showed how well Marinette can handle herself alone?
I can see why people think that Ladybug doesn’t need Chat Noir despite what the show was making him out to be as her partner. I can see why people think that Chat Noir is being sidelined in order to make Ladybug look cool.
It’s just that I, for one, think a little differently upon this matter. For me, Ladybug and Chat Noir are a tandem, and both are just as equally important.
Ladybug and Chat Noir need each other, and won’t last long if they were separated.
Why?
Because they are, like what their miraculous represented, the Yin and Yang. Missing one will bring bring imbalance and chaos to the other. They need each other for balance.
Well, to put a much simpler analogy:
Ladybug is The Light and Chat Noir is The Shadow.
Sure, Marinette gets the spotlight and the high key player in defeating akumas as she’s the only one who can purify them. She is the Good Luck, the one who chases away the bad karma.
But behind her, the one who always supports her in the shadows, is Chat Noir. And without him, she wouldn’t succeed in her fights against the akumas.
Why? Make an analysis on their powers.
Ladybug
- athletic ability, great acrobatic skill, can use the Yo-yo to bind others or deflect things, use yo-yo to call others, Lucky Charm - summon a lucky item that can help her, use Lucky Vision to know what to do, Creation - use the lucky item to undo the battle damages, purifies the akumas.
Chat Noir
- athletic ability, great acrobatic skill, great strength (really, this guy has been thrown miles away and still live), sharpened senses, night vision, staff to hit people with (it seemed it can also serve as a magnetic boomerang?), can elongate the staff (length unknown), his staff can also stick to anything and serve as a foothold, staff can also deflect anything, use staff to call others, put tracking devices on others (for cat chasing mouse?), Cataclysm - destroys anything that he wanted.
While Ladybug may seemed to have advantage, because her special moves are the highlights of the series, did you notice something? Her abilities are very limited, she had to use her wit in order to put things together. The strength of her abilities lie in techniques. Her powers are meant to be used for good only and cannot be used to harm others.
This makes her actions very limited. In a fight, one needs to be offensive too. You have to use force in order to defeat the enemy. Her attacks were all for binding or purifying but she has no real attack move. She has to improvise with what she have.
Meanwhile, we have Chat Noir.
His abilities lie more on physical and power aspect which are very practical to have. (Personally speaking, I prefer Chat Noir’s powers). His senses sharpened, he had great strength, had gadgets to track and observe others with, night vision…
He’s the perfect one to serve as Ladybug’s partner because he make up for what she lacks. There are lots of times when Ladybug get into tight situation where she needed to destroy (like cages and such) in order to be able to fight, and it’s Chat Noir who can do that. That is also why he’s the one who always tanks for her.
All of Chat Noir’s abilities are designed for fighting… and destruction. All of Ladybug’s abilities are designed for restraining… and creation. That is why these two need each other.
And to futher elaborate, I am going to make posts that concentrate more why one needs the other.
